Day 2 of Cat Chat's Cathletics VBS. Cat Chat does a great job integrating the theme. Today's was the Ten Commendments. There were 10 snacks and ten beads with a hand-out. Songs, games, and of course, the faith lesson reinforce the day's theme. Day 2's songs weren't as fun as yesterday's. The kids perked up noticeably when it came time to review them. VBS songs are my biggest peeve with commercial VBS programs. They are tough to get right. I think kids prefer songs such as Father Abraham, This is the day, or contemporary praise songs. We are supplementing with loads of cheers, some I wrote for previous VBS programs at my former church. The kids are loving the program, which is most important. Want evidence? The kids come back the second day upbeat, on time, and ready to roll. No photos today. There was a reporter and the director asked us to pack our camera. Incidently, the director, Catherine, sent the Diocese newspaper a press release by email, which she both cleared and copied to our pastor, Father DiMartino. It's a good idea to invite the press to get publicity for your program. My advice is to write up the description in advance and make a few notes before the interview. Be yourself!
Here is a photo of the bracelet the kids made yesterday. The instructor took the time to relate the beads to the 10 Commandments.
